It is getting more difficult than ever to find affordable homes for sale in Florida. In Tampa, the problem is being exacerbated by an influx of new homeowners moving to the area. Block House is an innovative case study of an affordable home in a developing neighborhood. The project started with a small lot (60’x100’) in a jurisdiction that limits the building’s overall size and aesthetic. This site sits in a neighborhood that has high visibility and traffic from the street. In response, privacy and safety were principal drivers in the buildings design. Block House’s built form conforms to the many restraints with deliberate opacities of modern materials. These materials visually protect the home while still preserving the luxuries of a new build. The project is designed with concrete masonry construction to maintain structural integrity in Tampa’s hurricane risk category, as well as cost efficiency in construction. The modest scale and materials lend itself to the budget conscious homeowner that does not wish to compromise on design.
